Transportation Improvement Program

Cobb County residents approved a referendum for a one-cent sales tax on September 20, 2005. Additional funding will be collected using a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (1%) between January 2006 and December 2011. The money raised from the sales tax will be used to fund transportation improvement projects in the city of Marietta and Cobb County.

Kennesaw Mountain to Chattahoochee River Multi-Use Trail and Marietta Multi-Use Trails

This project consists of several multi-use trail segments including:

  • Tower Road to N. Marietta Parkway
  • Marietta Station Walk to S. Marietta Parkway
  • Pedestrian Bridge over S. Marietta Parkway
  • West Dixie Avenue to S. Cobb Drive

The trail segments are proposed to be 10 feet wide off-street facilities. The project is partially funded by State Transportation Funds.

2008 Street Resurfacing Project

The third in a series of proposed street resurfacing projects will commence in July 2008. The Georgia DOT Local Assistance Road Program (LARP) resurfacing will be implemented by the GDOT in 2008. The following streets are currently included in each program.

Roswell Street (Olive Street to Fairground Street)

This project consists of improving Roswell Street from Olive Street to Fairground Street to provide two eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes.

Roswell Street (Victory Drive to Cobb Parkway)

This project consists of improving Roswell Street to provide four lanes with an 18-feet wide landscaped median, 8-feet wide sidewalks, street trees, and pedestrian level street lights from Victory Drive to Cobb Parkway.

Roswell Street Streetscapes

This project consists of pedestrian oriented improvement along Roswell Street from Park Street to the Square. The project includes improved sidewalks, street trees and street lights.

N. Fairground Street (Allgood Road to N. Marietta Parkway)

This project consists of improving N. Fairground Street to provide four lanes with an 18-feet wide landscaped median and 8-feet wide sidewalks from Allgood Road to N. Marietta Parkway. The project includes modifying the intersection of Allgood Road at N. Fairground St. to improve the vertical alignment and establish a through movement from Allgood Road southbound to N. Fairground Street southbound.

N. Fairground Street (N. Marietta Parkway to S. Marietta Parkway)

This project consists of improving N. Fairground Street to provide four lanes with an 18-feet wide landscaped median. The project also includes 6-feet wide sidewalks on both sides of the road. The project will also include Gateway improvements at the intersections with S. Marietta Parkway and Roswell Street.

Sidewalk and Multi-Use Trail Construction

Design is complete for Phase 2 and right of way acquisition is in progress. Phase 2 will be constructed after the right of way has been acquired. Phase 2 includes proposed sidewalk extensions along the following routes:

Powder Springs Road Streetscapes

This project consists of improving Powder Springs Road from S. Marietta Parkway to the proposed Powder Springs Road Connector intersection to include 4 lanes with a landscaped median, 8' sidewalks, street lights, streets trees, and other streetscape elements. A Public Information Meeting to present the project concept and to obtain comments from interested citizens was conducted in May 2007. The first phase of the project will extend from Chestnut Hill Road to Sandtown Road.

Roselane Street at Sessions Street Intersection Improvement

This project consists of improving the intersection of Roselane Street and Sessions Street since the closure of the Roselane Street railroad crossing at Kennesaw Avenue. The reconfigured intersection will provide for more efficient transition between the two streets while providing improved pedestrian facilities that will tie in to the future multi-use trail proposed in this vicinity.

Lower Roswell Road at Roswell Road

This project consists of construction of a median and improved turn lanes into the Southern Polytechnic State University campus main entrance on S. Marietta Parkway. The project includes a new traffic signal at the campus entrance. The project is being coordinated with the SPSU master plan improvements.

Wylie Road Sidewalks

This project consists of construction of a sidewalk along a portion of the east side of Wylie Road (between Augusta Drive and New Hope Road).

Franklin Road (S. Marietta Parkway to Delk Road)

This project consists of improving Franklin Road from S. Marietta Parkway to Twin Brooks Drive to provide four 11 ft. lanes with a median and 8 ft. sidewalks on both sides of the road. In addition, the project includes intersection and sidewalk improvements at Delk Road.

Franklin Road at Delk Road

This project consists of construction of right turn lanes on the northbound and southbound approaches to Delk Road. This project will be designed and constructed with the Franklin Road Improvements from S. Marietta Parkway to Delk Road project.

Kennesaw Avenue

This project consists of reconstructing Kennesaw Avenue from Tower Road to the CSX Railroad right of way. The proposed project includes replacement and repair of the existing curb and gutter and sidewalks, improving the existing storm drainage system, and milling and resurfacing the existing pavement. The roadway is not proposed to be widened or realigned. This project will be coordinated with the replacement of the Kennesaw Avenue bridge over Noses Creek.

Kennesaw Avenue bridge over Noses Creek

This project consists of construction of a new bridge to replace the existing bridge on Kennesaw Avenue over Noses Creek. The proposed bridge dimensions will include sufficient width to accommodate two lanes with minimum shoulders and a 6 ft. wide sidewalk on the west side of the roadway. The roadway may be closed to through traffic during construction of the new bridge. This project will be completed with the Kennesaw Avenue Improvements project.

Powder Springs Road Multi-Use Path (CO-AR-BP215)

This project consists of constructing a 10' wide off-road, multi-use bicycle and pedestrian side path along the eastern side of Powder Springs Road from Chestnut Hill Road to County Services Parkway. The proposed project includes the provision of bike racks, bicycle signage, pedestrian lighting, and pedestrian crossings at several intersections along the corridor. The proposed multi-use path improvements will be coordinated with the streetscapes project currently being designed between Chestnut Hill Road and Garrison Road.

S. Marietta Parkway Streetscapes and Multi-Use Trail

This project consists of improving S. Marietta Parkway between Powder Springs Street and the Kennesaw Avenue Overpass to provide a multi-use trail, decorative sidewalks, decorative streetlights, and an audible pedestrian crossing at Whitlock Avenue.

Lake Drive at S. Marietta Parkway

This project consists of construction of a southbound right turn lane on Lake Drive at S. Marietta Parkway to provide dedicated lanes for left turn and right turn movements onto S. Marietta Parkway. The turn lanes are proposed to be approximately 150 feet long. In addition, the project includes expanded curb radii at the intersection to allow for turning movements by large trucks. The project also includes installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection.

Church Street at N. Marietta Parkway

This project consists of construction of a southbound left turn lane on Church Street to eastbound N. Marietta Parkway. The new turn lane on Church Street is proposed to extend from the Old Page Street right of way to N. Marietta Parkway.

Lawrence Street

This project consists of widening existing lanes on Lawrence Street from Cole Street to Fairground Street. The proposed project includes replacement of the existing curb and gutter and sidewalks, improving the existing storm drainage system, and milling and resurfacing the existing pavement. The roadway is proposed to be widened to a minimum width of 24 feet (back of curb to back of curb).

Atlanta Street

This project consists of minimal improvements to Atlanta Street between Waterman Street and Anderson Street to provide two northbound through lanes on Atlanta Street.

Tower Road

Tower Road between Church Street and the rail road overpass will be improved to a 4 lane roadway with landscaped median and sidewalks. The project also includes turn lane improvements on Church Street and Cherokee Streets, a new road connection between White Street and Campbell Hill Street that will align with the new signalized intersection at Kennestone Hospital and Plaza Way on Tower Road. Once the newly aligned Campbell Hill Road and Marble Mill Road are constructed the unused portions of White Street and Campbell Hill Street will be closed. This project also includes the realignment of North Avenue and Cogburn Avenue into a single intersection and lowering of 2 hills on Tower Road for increased visibility. Construction is scheduled to begin Fall 2009 and expected to last through 2010. A project map and letter size route map of the proposed road improvements are below:

General Streets and Drainage Improvements

The current project includes extension of the westbound right turn lane on Polk Street at Burnt Hickory Road.

S. Marietta Parkway at SPSU Campus

This project consists of construction of a median and improved turn lanes into the Southern Polytechnic State University campus main entrance on S. Marietta Parkway. Powers Ferry Road at S. Marietta Parkway

This project consists of constructing a southbound right turn lane on Powers Ferry Road at S. Marietta Parkway.

Roswell Street (Barnes Street to Victory Drive)

This project consists of improving Roswell Street to provide four lanes with an 18-feet wide landscaped median, 8-feet wide brick sidewalks, street trees, and pedestrian level street lights from Victory Drive to Cobb Parkway.

Central Business District Waterline and Crosswalk Improvements

This project consists of constructing waterline, crosswalk, decorative signage, and resurfacing improvements at North, East, South, and West Park Square commencing January 4, 2010. Construction is anticipated to be substantially complete in mid April 2010.

UPDATE FOR WEEK OF 1/25/2010 South Park Square will be open. Construction will begin on waterline replacement along North Park Square. The intersection of Lawrence and Cherokee streets will be closed beginning Monday, January 25 for two weeks while construction on crosswalks is taking place. Motorists will be able to turn left onto North Park Square from East Park Square.
